Cinematic promotional video for a Hong Kong student society flagship event
The Hong Kong Public Affairs and Social Service Society at the University of Leeds was hosting its first flagship event, MONOPOLEEDS: a day-long experiential programme built around life choices, identity, and what it means to win. They needed a promotional video to recruit participants and set the tone for what the event was about.
Process and Strategy
The event's concept was philosophical: every decision is a fork in the road, and the smallest choices shape a life. The video had to carry that weight without feeling like a traditional student society promo. We agreed the footage should feel observational and cinematic, finding meaning in ordinary Leeds scenes rather than staging anything.
Creative Solution
I shot and edited the full video. The footage moves through the University of Leeds campus, a bar, a McDonald's counter, a night train platform, city streets at night, letting the locations speak to different kinds of choices and moments in life. Bilingual subtitles in Chinese and English carry the narration, giving the video a tone that felt personal to the Hong Kong student community it was made for. The edit holds a slow, deliberate pace that matches the reflective quality of the script.
Results
The video was used to promote MONOPOLEEDS ahead of the February 2023 event. It set a tone that went beyond a standard event announcement, framing the flagship as something worth showing up for.
